Nie Ma
Nie ma is a work of literary reportage about absence, loss, and memory. Through fragments of individual lives, places, and untold histories, it asks how what is missing continues to shape people and societies.
Work Information
What is absent gives shape to memory.
Mariusz Szczygieł's reportage collection takes its title from the Polish phrase for 'there is none.' It traces absences behind testimony, memory, and social history, combining journalistic precision with a literary sense of form.
Review Summaries
-
Readers respond to the fragmentary structure and restrained prose, which deepen the book's meditation on loss. Its appeal lies in turning precise factual details into wider cultural questions.
