Reviews

  • very good book

  • I have read other works by Lucía Etxebarria but I think to date, this is my favorite. While nothing really "happens" in the novel, it's a story of a young woman and her adolescence through her young adult years. I loved the book, and although the ending resolves nothing, I can't help but wonder if that's how real life is for most all of us. The one thing I can say is that there is an interesing conversation in this novel about alternative sexualities, the performance of gender, experimentation of drugs, and what it means to be a woman in contemporary Spain today. Etxebarria parodies Dante's Beatrice with her catchy title and character, Beatriz, that is seemingly nothing and simultaneously very much like Dante's Beatrice. All is all, an enjoyable read and not difficult to get through. Spanish is my second language so there were colloquialisms from Spain and particularly Madrid that I'm not familiar with, but other than that it was an easy read. Enjoy!
