Francisco García Pérez, La Nueva España ENGLISH DESCRIPTION Haunted all her life by feelings of terror and emptiness, forty-nine-year-old Urania Cabral returns to her native Dominican Republic - and finds herself reliving the events of l961, when the capital was still called Trujillo City and one old man terrorized a nation of three million. Rafael Trujillo, the depraved ailing dictator whom Dominicans call the Goat, controls his inner circle with a combination of violence and blackmail. In Trujillo's gaudy palace, treachery and cowardice have become a way of life. But Trujillo's grasp is slipping. There is a conspiracy against him, and a Machiavellian revolution already underway that will have bloody consequences of its own. In this 'masterpiece of Latin American and world literature, and one of the finest political novels ever written' (Bookforum), Mario Vargas Llosa recounts the end of a regime and the birth of a terrible democracy, giving voice to the historical Trujillo and the victims, both innocent and complicit, drawn into his deadly orbit.

  • Translated into English in 2001, the award winning author of this so called novel offers the reader a stunning view of the life and times of one of the best known dictators of the 20th century: the Dominican Republic's very own Rafael Leonidas Trujillo (1891-1961). Certainly the Nobel Prize judges must have taken this book into consideration in 2010 when they rewarded the author as they did because I think he certainly deserves it just for this work alone. Other observers of the Latin American scene have called him an adversary of authoritarian regimes and after reading La Fiesta del Chivo I say, with good reason, because he fills the bill from a literary point of view without question. The author skillfully unveils life in the DR during the years of "The Generalissimo." He does this by letting us observe the grief of one of the "Benefactor's" victims--a professional woman at mid life who escaped the dictator's clutches at age 13 fleeing to New York City and now returns to confront her past. In doing so she seeks to blame her own father, one of Trujillo's minions. Vargas Llosa employs flashbacks that toggle between the victim's revisitation and key moments leading up to the end of the regime. The webs of authority spun by the tyrant on nearly every Dominican including the woman's father and the entwined associated dependency not unlike a father and his children, provide a convincing view of a well oiled dictatorship even though some historians would call Trujillo a modernizing dictator. The high point for me revolved around Trujillo's assassination told with surprising and realistic detail, all of it certainly derived from careful field work blended with calculated shreds of fiction. Bottom line, I believe there is more history here than fiction. The author's penetrating exploration ends with a description of the sexual abuse of the thirteen year-old girl at the hands of the aging dictator told in painful-to-read passages that exposes not only her terrorized confusion but also the old man's vexation over his own physical decay. The tyrant's power corrupted him and debased his machismo ever more. This was one of the best books I've read this year.
