『黄金のノート』初版は1962年。 著者40代の作品である。 ドリス・レッシングは1980年代にノーベル賞候補になったが、以後、候補からはずれていたかのように見えていた時期が長い。欧米では2007年の受賞は遅すぎるとのコメントも出ている。本人も「亡くなった人にはあげられないから、生きている私になったんでしょう。」と笑っている。最高齢での受賞というおまけもついている。 だが、代表作『黄金のノート』は今日読んでも遅すぎはしない。作品には、執筆当時の社会背景が描かれ、その多くはすでに大きな変貌をとげてしまっている。そこから逆に、レッシングの視点は、その時代だけに通用する一時的なものに動かされてはいないということがわかる。執筆から50年後の今だからこそ彼女の眼力がいっそう鮮明になる。
