King of the barnyard, Chanticleer struts about all day. When a fox bursts into his domain, dupes him into crowing, and then grabs him in a viselike grip, Chanticleer must do some quick thinking to save himself and his barnyard kingdom. Winner, 1959 Caldecott Medal Notable Children's Books of 1940–1970 (ALA) Winner, 1992 Kerlan Award
Often referred to as the father of English poetry, Geoffrey Chaucer was a fourteenth-century philosopher, alchemist, astrologer, bureaucrat, diplomat, and author of many significant poems. Chaucer’s writing was influential in English literary tradition, as it introduced new rhyming schemes and helped develop the vernacular tradition—the use of everyday English—rather than the literary French and Latin, which were common in written works of the time. Chaucer’s best-known—and most imitated—works include The Canterbury Tales , Troilus and Criseyde , The Book of the Duchess , and The House of Fame . Barbara Cooney is one of the most well-loved authors and illustrators of children's books today. She has won many awards for her books, including the American Book Award and two Caldecott Medals for Illustration. Ms. Cooney lives in Damariscotta, Maine.

Old story retold
I wanted a child friendly version of a Canterbury Tale - this does that well. Illustrations are a little dated but it is fine. Arrived very promptly and in good condition too.

Excellent Overview of The Nun’s Priest’s Tale
I teach the Canterbury Tales to a high school English class and I use this book as an introduction to The Nun’s Priest’s Tale. This cute and colorful storybook follows the tale pretty well and gives students a full overview of the story. After reading it aloud to the class, students are ready to dig into the Chaucer’s actual tale and explore his use of imagery, illusion, humor, and criticism. It’s a picture book, but it’s been an excellent addition to my high school classroom.

Well illustrated adaptation of a cautionary Canterbury Tale
Barbara Cooney's well-illustrated adaptation of one of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales (itself an adaptation of a classic Aesop's fable) highlights the pitfalls of pride. The story does not makes things overly simplistic, as children's stories often do, which makes it appealing to adults too.

Great intro to Chaucer for your kid
Great book for when my grandson and I were studying Chaucer for our homeschool unit on medieval England.

Pages were out of order; story not great either
Many problems with this book. The worst one is that it was misprinted and starting a few pages in, every page is out of order. Even if the pages were correctly printed, I was not overly impressed. The images were nice, but up to the standards of other Caldecott winners, and the story wasn't particularly impressive. It's done in a faux-medieval style that makes the book harder to understand for children, but the story is still aimed at kids, so I don't know who thought that presentation was a good idea.
