'A wonderful, unsparing epic ... an intimate human story of loss and love' New Statesman, Books of the Year The epic novel of love, war and revolution from Mikhail Sholokhov, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature An extraordinary Russian masterpiece, And Quiet Flows the Don follows the turbulent fortunes of the Cossack people through peace, war and revolution - among them the proud and rebellious Gregor Melekhov, who struggles to be with the woman he loves as his country is torn apart. Borne of Mikhail Sholokhov's own early life in the lands of the Cossacks by the river Don, it is a searing portrait of a nation swept up in conflict, with all the tragic choices it brings.
Mikhail Aleksandrovich Sholokhov (1905-1984) was born in Russia in the land of the Cossacks. During the Russian civil war he fought on the side of the revolutionaries, and in 1922 he moved to Moscow to become a journalist. In 1926, Sholokhov began writing And Quiet Flows the Don, and he published the first volume in 1928. Three more volumes followed with the last one published in 1940. In 1965 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature "for the artistic power and integrity with which, in his epic of the Don, he has given expression to a historic phase in the life of the Russian people".

An in-depth story of family and life as a cossack in Russia before, during and after WW1
I'm half way through and this tale us very engaging. Lots if characters w similar names yet I keep finding the story olli g me along. I e read a number of Russian authors to date - Turgenov and Tolstoy- this is definitely an equivalent to those two. As I read through, I do wonder how the original Russian version read and if the translation is helping or hindering... Great book - i had lost an old copy on a plane ride last year and had to get a new copy which I'm quite happy I did.

A Landmark In World Literature
This is one of the great books in world literature. When I read that some compared it to War and Peace I was somewhat skeptical. I'd heard about this novel back in college when I studied Russian history, and I thought since it was written during the Communist Era it would have been censured and turned into propaganda. But that is not the case. The novel tells the story of the Don Cossacks, from pre World War I, through the war, then into the Russian Revolution and the Civil War that followed. I would compare it with Dr. Zhivago in terms of the characters being pushed and pulled along by historical forces they can't control, and the choices they have to make. It is not an easy read but if you are willing to take the time, it is definitely worth it.
