• レベッカのオマージュミステリとして興味津々のストーリー

  新婚旅行から帰って、ダーシーは新たな任務で出かけてしまい、無聊を託つジョージーを悪友のベリンダが訪れる。祖母が亡くなり、コーンウォールの家を相続したので、下見に同行してほしいというのだ。その家は住めるような代物ではないとわかり、宿泊先をさがしていると、ベリンダは子どものころ、夏を共にすごしたローズと出会う。ローズは、子ども時代の遊び仲間のトニー・サマーズと結婚し、崖の上の邸宅に住んでいた。是非泊まれと誘われ、ベリンダは渋々受けることにする。 トニーは屋敷の女主人だった裕福な妻を事故で亡くしていた。ローズは身分違いにもかかわらず、結婚したが、この屋敷の家政婦のミス・マナーズに牛耳られていた。ローズはトニーが自分に飽いて殺そうとしているのではないかと疑っていた。またもと妻の死にも夫がかかわっていたのではないかとジョジーとベリンダに話す。トニーとベリンダは数年前、短期間だがつき合っていたことがあり、ベリンダと再会したトニーは関係を求めるが、ベリンダははっきりと断る。その夜、ベリンダの部屋で、裸のトニーが胸を刺されて発見される、側にはベリンダが血まみれの短剣をもって立っていた。殺人犯と疑われた、親友ベリンダを助けるためジョジーは真犯人を突き止められるか？ この話は、レベッカのオマージュとして書いたという作者の序文から、おお、何か面白そうと思って読み始めたが、ふだんのラブコメっぽい話ではなく、なかなかミステリとしてもよく書けていて、どこがどうレベッカ的なのだろうと思いつつ、犯人は誰と真剣に推理できて、とても面白かった。

• I did really enjoy this book, my pet peeve though is an error many writers make, a baronet is not a peer, he is an hereditary knight not a Lord.

• I have read all the Royal Spyness mysteries to date, waiting for the one that would be the most interesting to review. I was a little worried after reading Among the Cheetahs that Georgie and Darcy’s marriage had forever rearranged the dynamics of her literary lifestyle. I can see now that has not happened. Georgie and Belinda are back at it, and Darcy does not show up until near the end. It seems Belinda has inherited some real estate in Cornwall, a decrepit cottage that must have once belonged to a smuggler, as it has a separate entrance that goes through a cave leading to the waterfront. The grandmother who left it to her had a grand house nearby but had already sold it. Belinda had spent her summers there as a child and adolescent, and therefore knew people in the area. Her being recognized results in their being invited to stay at one of the other elegant homes. The setting is reminiscent of Rebecca by Daphne DuMaurier, especially when the housekeeper has Georgie and Belinda wear evening gowns that had belonged to the deceased former mistress of the house. There is, of course, a murder but not the usual contact with the royal family or with Georgie’s mother. It is a good read and one of the more difficult mysteries to resolve. Don’t be lead astray by red herrings.

• It you have enjoyed the previous versions of Georgie's adventures, you'll like this one, too. For a change the usual companion characters stay away, Quenie at home, cooking, mother in Germany, Grandpa in London, Fie and Binky in Scotland, Darcy on assignment, except at the very end. So we can concentrate on Georgie and Belinda. I liked that. It gives the right atmosphere. It's like meeting old friends. You hear some news but nothing unexpected, so you can rest in your armchair, reading a pleasant story and relax. What more could you want? You want thrill and excitement and action and running, fighting heroes? Ok, wrong choice. Try Lee Child, but don't blame me when you don't sleep as well as after this nice dose of cosy crime. Delightful, that's what it is.

• My first time reading this author and I found it very enjoyable. I am going to go back and start at the beginning s of the series.

• Comme je le disais dans ma critique des neuf premiers livres de cette série, j’ai passé d’excellents moments à les lire. Ces huit nouveaux tomes sont toujours aussi passionnants. J’aime aussi voir l’évolution des personnages et les changements qui interviennent dans leur vie. Je ne veux rien dévoiler pour ne pas « spoiler » la lecture de ceux qui pénétreraient maintenant dans l’univers de Georgie. J’ai bien l’intention d’acheter la suite des aventures de Georgie et de son entourage. Le problème c’est que je ne trouve que le tome 18 et que je ne sais pas si l’auteure va continuer cette série. Si d’autres publications dans cette série de The Royal Spyness ne sont pas prévues, je vais beaucoup la regretter.
