Four city-bred children find themselves on their own in an unheated New England farmhouse in this captivating tale by the author of The Velveteen Rabbit . With their father gone on a business trip and their mother assisting a faraway relative, Kay, Garry, Caroline, and Martin must rely on themselves — and each other — to solve the day-to-day challenges of a chilly country winter. Margery Williams Bianco's Depression-era novel offers young readers an inspiring tale of the value of self-reliance as well as the importance of family ties. The 1937 Newbery Medal–winning Honor Book is enhanced by charming black-and-white illustrations.

Best known for The Velveteen Rabbit or How Toys Become Real, English-American author Margery Williams Bianco (1881–1944) wrote several popular children's books. Many of her stories recount the fantastic capacity of animals and inanimate objects to experience human emotions.

レビュー

  • A wonderful old-fashioned read and a surprisingly attractive edition.

  • This book written in the 1930's, takes place in a rural northern area near New York City. When the father of the Ellis family goes on an archeological expedition, the mother and her four children move from the city to a country home without electricity to try to stretch their meager budget to survive. They rent an old rundown house with many cracks and no indoor plumbing. As they prepare for the oncoming New England winter, the mother is suddenly called away to take a sick niece to a warmer climate. A very cranky old lady moves in to chaperone the children. Nineteen year old Kay, and her younger sister Garry(Margaret), take on the responsibility of running the home and raising their young brother Martin, and little sister Caroline. The artistic Kay will manage the house, while the boyish outdoor type Garry will manage the wood and outside work. With some help from their good neighbors the Rowes, and their cabdriver friend, Edna, the Ellis children will weather the frozen winter, make updates to the house, overcome the obnoxious chaperone, and unexpectedly make good friends with the often absent owner of their rented home and his family. As Kay struggles to be creative and attempt to write a children's book, and Garry struggles with her inner self to become independent and plans a life that revolves around travel, gardening, and nature, you will be pulled into their story for survival and their ability to overcome and thrive in a difficult situation.
