A journey in search of one of the most elusive creatures on the planet Adventurer Sylvain Tesson has led a restless life, riding across Central Asia on horseback, freeclimbing the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame, and traversing the Himalayas by foot. But while recovering from an accident that left him in a coma, and nursing his wounds from a lost love, he found himself domesticated, his lust for life draining with each moment spent staring at a screen. An expedition to the mountains of Tibet, in search of the famously elusive snow leopard, presented itself as a cure. For the chance to glimpse this near mythical beast, Tesson and his companions must wait for hours without making a sound or a movement, enduring the thin air and brutal cold. Their vigil becomes an act of faith--many have pursued the snow leopard for years without seeing it--and as they keep their watch, Tesson comes to embrace the virtues of patience and silence. His faith is rewarded when the snow leopard, the spirit of the mountain, reveals itself: an embodiment of what we have surrendered in our contemporary lives. And the simple act of waiting proves to be an antidote to the frenzy of our times. A celebration of the power and grace of the wild, and a requiem for the world's vanishing places, The Art of Patience is a revelatory account of the communion between nature and the human heart. Sylvain Tesson has written a new masterpiece on the relationship between man and beast in prose as sublime as the wilderness that inspired it.

Sylvain Tesson has walked from Russia to India, participated in archaeological expeditions in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and wintered alone in a cabin on a lake in Siberia. He earned a diplôme d’études appliquées in geopolitics at the University of Paris VIII. One of France’s most celebrated writers, he has been awarded the Prix Médicis Essai and the Prix Goncourt de la Nouvelle. An international bestseller, The Art of Patience won the Prix Renaudot in 2019.

レビュー

  • This is a stunning revelatory, emotionally jarring at times, but still wonderful book. The author, accompanied by the inimitable nature photographer Vincent Munier, and two other explorers, undertake the perilous journey in the middle of winter into the kingdom of the elusive Snow Leopard that is located in the mountains of Tibet. I found the authors observations on various philosophies, on life in general quite moving. If one is interested in saving the many endangered species, of which the Snow Leopard is certainly one, this book is a must and will act as an encouragement to do more in the future. I am planning to read the book again, and have gifted it to members of my family.

  • Indescribably beautiful. I adore big cats and the snow leopard is the most majestic of them all. This book isn't just about trying to see a big cat, it is a glorious reflection of how the world should be. Thank you.

  • There are many readers for whom this book was transcendent. Because many are much better reviewers than I, I will spare you the long read. Suffice it to say that for those who look for insight and inspiration from works like this, you will not be disappointed. I suspect quite the opposite. This is an extraordinary book for reasons that will become obvious days, weeks, months and years after you read it. I’m reminded of things that were said or observed daily. It was a treat for me.

  • This book completely had me mesmerized! In fact, I read it twice. I've never been one for philosophy, but Tesson's reflections on humanity were interwoven with the incredible story of capturing a glimpse of the elusive snow leopard in cold and mountainous Tibet. In seeing a glimpse of the leopard, he began to see into himself and his place in the world and society. It's a modest sized book with larger than usual print, but don't be deceived; every word is important! I hope you enjoy and learn from it as much as I have.

  • Having seen the amazing movie The Velvet Queen, I decided to order this book, the written version of Munier‘s search for the elusive snow leopard. I was not disappointed. The book is beautifully written and draws you you into the stark wild vastness of the Tibetan mountains. On one level, nothing much happens. But there is a sense of fullness, mystery, being in the presence of primordial sacredness.
