Doug graduated from the Illustration as Visual Essay master’s program at the School of Visual Arts in 2014 and was a 2015 Sendak Fellow. Love this book
Didn’t realize how much of a hit this book would be with both kids and adults, myself included. It reads like poetry, the drawings are so beautiful, and the story really does feel like a little escape. Highly recommend!

Brilliantly expressive drawings
Very few words but this is a full book visually, the world is rich and believable. The dog character in particular is beautifully and sensitively depicted. I'm very happy with my purchase ☺️

A very special book, highly recommend this one!
This is a wonderful book, I can see why it won a Caldecott Medal. Every time I look at it, I see one more really clever thing that the writer/artist has done to tie the story together. It's very simple, very few words but it's a great example of the art telling most of the story. The illustrations do a great job of conveying mood and feeling and it needs few words. That can make the book new and different every time you read it to a young child, they may spot the subtle things or the reader can point them out. And who doesn't love an adorable dog, who gets out of the hot summer city with his kind owner for a special day at the beach?
