This Caldecott Medal-winning, classic retelling of Little Red Riding Hood is one of the most celebrated picture books of our time. With characteristic flair and energy, award-winning artist Ed Young illustrates the ancient Chinese version of the favorite fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood. Young's vibrant, yet delicate, pastels and watercolors add drama to the deftly translated story. ★ ''A gripping variation of Red Riding Hood. This is an outstanding achievement that will be pored over again and again." — School Library Journal , starred review
Caldecott medalist Ed Young was born in Tientsin, China, and brought up in Shanghai. He cites the philosophy of Chinese painting as an inspiration for much of his work. "A Chinese painting is often accompanied by words," he explains; "they are complementary. There are things that words do that pictures never can, and likewise, there are images that words can never describe." Mr. Young has been illustrating children's books for more than twenty years and has won many awards. He received the 1990 Caldecott Medal for his book Lon Po Po , and his much-lauded collaboration with anthologist Nancy Larrick, Cats Are Cats , was named one of the Ten Best Illustrated Books of 1988 by The New York Times . Mr. Young studied at the University of Illinois, the Art Center of Los Angeles, and Pratt Institute in New York City. He and his family live in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York. copyright 2000 by Penguin Putnam Books for Young Readers. All rights reserved.

Poor Wolf
The artwork is wonderful and so is the story, although I wouldn`t quite call it "Little Red Riding Hood." It is the wolf who comes calling on three sisters, while their mother is away. He fools the younger two, and it is left to the eldest to confirm her suspicions and save the day. My boys found it rather thrilling, and it gave me an opportunity to stress the importance of communication as well as listening to "oniichan" if Mommy is not around. However, they both felt a little sorry for the wolf in the end, since he never got around to harming anyone.

I rate a book based on how much my five years old son enjoyed the story. He was not very interested but it was interesting to learn the different Chinese names. Story was just average.

Un conte chinois qui tient à la fois du "Petit Chaperon Rouge" et de "La chèvre et les biquets". Mes élèves de Moyenne Section ont bien aimé et ont très bien compris l'histoire.

A classic story for kids about outsmarting a wolf. My daughters are 3 and 6. The 3 year old just loves to be read to. The 6 year old loves this and said the wolf didn’t have to be bad, but he made a choice. And he’ll be ok because his heart can be put back together. It is a good fable like all the class stories and tales.

This was a great text to use with a class of Year 2 and 3 children. They absolutely loved it, and the story promoted lots of discussion, drama and writing.
