  • Excellent!!! I had to force myself to put down this book - otherwise no chores would have been done!!! Keeps you guessing right to the end with all the hints and red herrings along the way. I haven't read a book of Michael's that hasn't been good! This is the first in a trilogy so rather read it first.

  • Ecriture / Style efficace. Captivant.

  • .. by Mr Robotham I personally expected nothing else but a hair-stands-up story. But this time I was a little bit unsatisfied. The story was there, but the solution plus the future of the 2 main protagonists has been left open. And I personally hate cliffhangers, because I was not THAT much a fan of those 2. One psychologically handicapped psychologist (once again) and an absolutely absurd female patient who is a walking lie-detector! More than that and You fly over the Cuckoo's Nest. If You read other reviews, You will see, what I want to say: Too much improbable twists and turns and that annoying super-heroine who catches all those that lie... Gimme a break. A follow-up is available, and costs a lot of bucks. I leave it where it is. Thanks, but NO thanks! No second chances with this couple of... "I-don't-know"... Written well, but wrong personalities... Only 3*** stars, others may think different.

  • I always loved Michael Robotham and this is one of this best books...The two characters Cyrus and Evie are etched out very well

  • 4.5 Stars. I am thankful to Goodreads for introducing me to many authors who are new to me. I was not aware of Michael Rebothem and others whose books have given me much pleasure. This is an engaging, intense, pulse-pounding thriller in which the mysteries and suspense never waivers. A malnourished, traumatized, filthy child with rickets is found in a secret room. Her unknown past, identity, age, and true name were never discovered. Due to the lack of any records and small size, her true age was not determined, and she was judged to be anywhere between ages 11 and 15 years of age. She was hidden in that room while her supposed abductor was viciously tortured and killed and she could hear his screams. Many days passed before her hiding place was discovered, and this was sensational news. She was nicknamed Angel Face by the public and press. Attempts to place her in foster homes were unsuccessful as she ran away or would become angry and destructive. She was given a new name, Evie Cormac, and was placed in an institution for troubled children. A psychologist, Cyrus Haven, was chosen to evaluate her and he was hoping to find out anthing she might remember of her history. Evie was applying through the courts for emancipation, claiming she was now 18 years old. Cyrus had a dark, disturbing, tragic past. Cyrus was professionally intrigued by Evie's extraordinary gift of knowing when a person was lying. Evie claimed this ability to be a curse. He knew of her record of running away, violent behaviour and petty crime, but was sympathetic of her situation. He was unable to unlock her secret past. Her court appeal failed because her age could not be proven and it was thought she was not prepared to function in the outside world and must return to the home for disturbed children. At this point, Cyrus makes a snap decision to become her ward and to bring her home to his large, dilapidated house. It was not an easy adjustment for these two loners., but both developed into sympathetic, fascinating characters and they developed a tenuous bond which was heart-warming. At the same time, Cyrus's profession as a psychologist involved him in an associative role in a police investigation. A beautiful, popular 15-year-old girl, Jodie Sheehan, had been murdered. She was a talented figure skater and regarded as a nice, ideal girl-next-door type. The police soon had a culprit in custody, but Cyrus suspected he was not the guilty killer. He suspected the man in jail found the dying or dead Jody and may have committed an indignity to her body. Cyrus believes reluctantly that Evie can help him uncover the truth in a case where everyone seems to be lying. Evie discovers that Jodie was not the upstanding, innocent teenager as portrayed. She is in danger and injured while inadvertently finding some connections which throw more light on Jody's secret, personal life. The ending was frightening and electrifying. There is more mystery to be revealed, and I was happy to learn that there will be a sequel this July. The price for a Kindle edition is shocking, $22.99 Canadian +15% sales tax. I want to know what comes next for Cyrus and Evie, but must it come at such a high price?
