Winner of the Newbery Medal A New York Times Bestseller Thoughtful, strong-willed sixth-grader Merci Suarez navigates difficult changes with friends, family, and everyone in between in a resonant new novel from Meg Medina. Merci Suarez knew that sixth grade would be different, but she had no idea just how different. For starters, Merci has never been like the other kids at her private school in Florida, because she and her older brother, Roli, are scholarship students. They don’t have a big house or a fancy boat, and they have to do extra community service to make up for their free tuition. So when bossy Edna Santos sets her sights on the new boy who happens to be Merci’s school-assigned Sunshine Buddy, Merci becomes the target of Edna’s jealousy. Things aren't going well at home, either: Merci’s grandfather and most trusted ally, Lolo, has been acting strangely lately — forgetting important things, falling from his bike, and getting angry over nothing. No one in her family will tell Merci what's going on, so she’s left to her own worries, while also feeling all on her own at school. In a coming-of-age tale full of humor and wisdom, award-winning author Meg Medina gets to the heart of the confusion and constant change that defines middle school — and the steadfast connection that defines family.

Meg Medina is the author of the Newbery Medal–winning book Merci Suárez Changes Gears , which was also a 2018 Kirkus Prize finalist. She is also the author of picture books Mango, Abuela, and Me , illustrated by Angela Dominguez, which was a Pura Belpré Author Award Honor Book, and Tía Isa Wants a Car , illustrated by Claudio Muñoz, which won the Ezra Jack Keats New Writer Award. The daughter of Cuban immigrants, she grew up in Queens, New York, and now lives in Richmond, Virginia.

レビュー

  • You see the struggles of 6th grade: fitting in, differences in economic status, importance of family, coping with others who are mean and selfish, not getting your way Everytime, coping with change, learning about aging, learning compassion, putting others before yourself, the danger of keeping secrets... But aren't those the ongoing lessons of our lives? It's good to learn those earlier than later! Read this because my kid was reading it for battle of the books. But I'd recommend all kids (and most adults) read it! Highly recommend!

  • O livro é bom, a história é bem interessante, comprei pro meu filho para utilizar ma escola "Grade 6". A utilização no Kindle é muito prática.

  • Super interesante y didáctico 💯💯💯💯💯💯

  • This was a lovely book and story. I’ve recommended it to both my kids, boy and girl! I know they’d enjoy it too.

  • I bought the book for my son‘s Battle of Book reading club. He not only finished the book, but also wrote a review for it: “There aren’t a lot of chances in Seaward Pines. This is what Merci thinks anyway. She gets selected for a sunshine buddy, though neither Merci nor Michael, now sunshine buddy likes it. Of course, though the inevitable class bully, Edna, steps in and makes fun of Merci for having a boy as a sunshine buddy. Will Merci stay in between Edna’s feet or will she finally gain some free wills?” To find out, read the book.
