In this new novel acclaimed Maori novelist Patricia Grace visits the often terrifying and complex world faced by men of the Maori Battalion in Italy during World War II. Tu is proud of his name--the Maori god of war. But for the returned soldier there's a shadow over his own war experience in Italy. Three brothers went to war, but only one returned--Tu is the sole survivor.
Patricia Grace is the first Maori woman to publish a collection of short stories (1975). Since then she has published three other short story collections, three award-winning novels, and several children's books. Her novel Dogside Story (UH Press edition, 2002) won the 2001 Kiriyama Prize for fiction. She is widely anthologized and translated into more than eight languages, and is considered not only one of the finest writers in New Zealand and the Pacific, but one of the most important writers of the post-colonial novel in English in the world today.

This is a heartbreaking book about war, family love and endurance.I have loved it for years but lost my copy after I lent it against my better judgement. The fact that it the book is by a New Zealand Maori author my be off putting to some potential readers but its messages cross culture and generations. A great book by one of New Zealands best authors.is

More than a war story
Although the terrible gruesomeness of war is so effectively described, this is a moving story of the motivation and feelings of a sensitive young Maori man who values the comradeship of his battalion and ultimately seeks a form of redemption for what he regards as his unearned status as a hero. I found it to be a very moving story, providing a powerful insight into the lives of Maori men and women during a momentous period of history when I was a child in war time Aotearoa.

It felt like it was written by a woman
Struggled to engage with this book, some bits were very thought provoking, but overall, this book just didn't do it for me. It felt like it was written by a woman, which jarred with the male narrator.

Five Stars
An interesting account of Maori culture and World War 2's demands on it.

riveting I couldn't put down
This story is like a finely woven korowai. I laughed, I cried and I went on a journey with my dad nga mihi
