This edition of Walter Van Tilburg Clark’s collection of short stories—which includes “Hook,” Clark’s most renowned story—makes these pieces available again to a new generation of readers. Critic John R. Milton once said that Walter Van Tilburg Clark "did perhaps more than anyone else to define (in his fiction) the mode of perception, the acquisition of knowledge, and the style which we tend to call Western." In 1950, Walter Van Tilburg Clark, author of the acclaimed novel The Ox-Bow Incident , published a collection of short stories that had already won distinction in various national magazines. The collection was well received by reviewers, and subsequent critics have noted that these stories reflect both Clark’s literary power and the major concerns of his novels: the interior and intuitive complexities of good and evil, and the fragile, intricate web that connects humankind to the rest of the natural world. A foreword by Ann Ronald, one of the West’s most astute literary critics, sets the stories into the context of Clark’s oeuvre and illuminates the way they reveal crucial characteristics of this writer’s imagination.

Walter Van Tilburg Clark, author of The Ox-box Incident , The City of Trembling Leaves , The Watchful Gods and Other Stories & The Track of the Cat , lived in Virginia City and is considered one of Nevada's most distinguished novelists. Born in 1909, he ranks as one of Nevada's most distinguished literary figures in the twentieth century, as well as a leading interpreter of the American West. Clark died in Virginia City, Nevada, in 1971.

レビュー

  • A gorgeous, beautifully written, mostly unknown collection of wonderful short stories!!

I first read this collection many years ago and I was struck by the two most popular in the collection: Hook and The Watchful Gods. Both stories had me gripped and broken hearted and enthralled and amazed and...and...and... I had read Clark's novels and loved his writing, but this collection remained one of two of my all time favorite short story collections (the other being J.D. Salinger's "Nine Stories"). enough has been written about the plots of these stories, but it remains incredible to me each time I go back to re-read them, how engrossed I become in the world that Clark creates. He grips you without any indication of sentimentality or pedantry; his writing is clear and concise and somehow manages to work its way into your soul before you have any idea what has happened. These are among the most beautiful pieces of writing it has been my pleasure to read ---and I am a voracious reader! I try to recommend this collection to everyone, but most people, unfortunately, don't know who I am talking about until I mention "The Ox Bow Incident" -- which I think was brilliant, but did not affect me the way this collection did. IF you love to read; IF you love the experience of experiencing something thrilling and breathtaking in the reading experience, then by all means, buy a copy of this book. I promise you will not regret it. This is a collection for booklovers and reading-lovers --- and for some of those (me included) who would like to think of themselves as writers. It is, all things considered, a true inspiration.

  • Awesome short stories

I had read "Hook" about 50 years ago, and it moved me so much that I never forgot it. I told several people over the years about it. I decided to get a new copy for myself but it was a hard search as it is a short story and not a titled book. When I found "The Watchful Gods and Other Stories" I was elated!! There was "HOOK" I re-read it at once! Walter VanTilberg Clark was a master storyteller, and this collection of his work is excellent!

  • Very good

Van Tilburg Clark has been underestimated. His Ox-bow Incident is a modern classic satirizing masculinity, but this seems to have been missed by the critics. I thought he might have some of that genius in these stories. He didn't but his writing his excellent.

  • Three Stars

fast service but the book smells of strong mildew maybe I can fix it. come on guys
