ジョン・キャディの詩集『The Color of Mesabi Bones』（1989年、Milkweed Editions）は、ミネソタ州北東部、メサビ鉄山地帯の採掘の町で育った詩人の記憶を、詩と散文詩という二つの形式で織り成した作品集である。冒頭の詩群から「巨人（the Giant）」「子ども（the child）」「少年（the boy）」という繰り返し登場する人物が登場し、父と息子という普通の関係をおとぎ話的な次元へと高める。採掘の爆破音、戦勝記念日の祝賀、赤カエデや黄色いジャケット（スズメバチ）など、土地固有の記憶が詩的なイメージとして刻まれている。同年のLA Times Book Prize 詩部門受賞作。

This man has a website called morning-earth.org that has the option of signing up to get 5x a week nature picture (his also) with his poetry about the picture. I'd been getting the e-mails for years but this year he began having a Friday section where he sends out a picture without a poem and people submit poetry to go with it. I asked if my MIddle School Students could participate. He added a student section. He made some of my kids diehard poetry writers!!!! They are begging to do it again next year. He grips a wide range of the population. This book is about his abusive childhood and I have not read it to my students because it is so real. I am not sure that they could handle it because of its reality. I don't read a lot of poetry books but this one is definitely a good slow read - so you can think about the ones that speak to you.
