INSTANT #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER PARADE MAGAZINE – ONE OF FALL'S MOST ANTICIPATED BOOKS AARP'S MOST ANTICIPATED BOOKS OF FALL CRIMEREADS – ONE OF THE BEST TRADITIONAL MYSTERIES OF THE YEAR GLOBE AND MAIL - TOP 100 BOOKS OF THE YEAR CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR - ONE OF THE BEST NOVELS OF THE YEAR KIRKUS REVIEWS - ONE OF THE BEST MYSTERIES/THRILLERS OF THE YEAR LIBRARY JOURNAL - ONE OF THE BEST CRIME FICTION BOOKS OF THE YEAR The 16th novel by #1 bestselling author Louise Penny finds Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Sûreté du Quebec investigating a sinister plot in the City of Light On their first night in Paris, the Gamaches gather as a family for a bistro dinner with Armand’s godfather, the billionaire Stephen Horowitz. Walking home together after the meal, they watch in horror as Stephen is knocked down and critically injured in what Gamache knows is no accident, but a deliberate attempt on the elderly man’s life. When a strange key is found in Stephen’s possession it sends Armand, his wife Reine-Marie, and his former second-in-command at the Sûreté, Jean-Guy Beauvoir, from the top of the Tour d’Eiffel, to the bowels of the Paris Archives, from luxury hotels to odd, coded, works of art. It sends them deep into the secrets Armand’s godfather has kept for decades. A gruesome discovery in Stephen’s Paris apartment makes it clear the secrets are more rancid, the danger far greater and more imminent, than they realized. Soon the whole family is caught up in a web of lies and deceit. In order to find the truth, Gamache will have to decide whether he can trust his friends, his colleagues, his instincts, his own past. His own family. For even the City of Light casts long shadows. And in that darkness devils hide.

レビュー

  • One of the best books in this series !

Yes, goodness exists. Thank you for a beautiful story again. I am looking forward to the next book!

  • Terrific story, great narration

The narration is superb. The story is up there with Penny/'s best. Just a great listen all round.

  • Exciting conclusion, dryish characters

Like many mysteries, the conclusion was very exciting, and the detective being able to work out the complex web of clues made him look like a godlike genius. If you like heartwarming father-son, family and male colleague drama, this is full of it. Though, the characters lacked unique, memorable personalities. It was hard to tell who was talking without the author saying so. The majority of the book was also a bit of a crawl. More exciting twists midway might be nice.

  • Having read them (the negative reviews), I want to rebut them. This book is set in Paris, rather than Three Pines in Quebec. The main players are there too, of course. The story was intriguing and the characters true to form. All this has been said by others. For my part, I thought this complete change of venue for her story was brave on the author’s part, educational for some readers, and an overall interesting change of scene for all readers. I commend Louise Penny for working outside her comfort zone and bringing us this fascinating story. The best books always teach us something, as they tell the story... This book qualifies as a “best book”!

  • Wonderful story which took me to the streets of parish and yet again into the characters arms . I love Louise Penny writing style which allows you to incest so deeply into her characters. Couldn’t put the book down say no more!

  • Louise Penny’s Inspector Gamache series is my cup of tea! Paris is the setting for All the Devils Are Here and brought back delicious and delightful memories for me. I love when her plot twists trip me up. Her books are so inviting, readable and often ingenious!

  • Terrible. Poorly written and lacking a realistic story line

  • Another great novel in this fabulous series. This time, Gamache and his family are in Paris, on holiday, awaiting the birth of Annie's and Jean Guy's second child. But everything changes when Armand's godfather gets almost killed in a hit-and-run. Quickly it becomes clear that this was no mere accident, and within hours everything spins out of control and it is difficult to tell friend from foe. It is Louise Penny's special genius to combine excellent, plausible plots with great, three-dimensional characters. I have not yet met any author who allows their protagonists so much space for development, and who is so realistic about the depths and shadows and flaws in human nature. And who is yet so firmly on the side of truth and love and life and grace and happiness. I look forward to the next Gamache-novel.
