AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER! NOW A BRITBOX SERIES STARRING BEN ALDRIDGE AND PEARL MACKIE The Long Call from Ann Cleeves—bestselling and award-winning author of the Vera and Shetland series, both of which are hit TV shows—introduces the first in the stunning Matthew Venn series. “In Matthew Venn, Ann has created a complex, daring, subtle character.” —Louise Penny "Matthew Venn is a keeper. A stunning debut for Cleeves’ latest crimefighter."—David Baldacci In North Devon, where two rivers converge and run into the sea, Detective Matthew Venn stands outside the church as his estranged father’s funeral takes place. On the day Matthew left the strict evangelical community he grew up in, he lost his family too. Now, as he turns and walks away again, he receives a call from one of his team. A body has been found on the beach nearby: a man with a tattoo of an albatross on his neck, stabbed to death. The case calls Matthew back to the people and places of his past, as deadly secrets hidden at their hearts are revealed, and his new life is forced into a collision course with the world he thought he’d left behind.

ANN CLEEVES is the multi-million copy bestselling author behind three hit television series— Shetland , starring Douglas Henshall, Vera , starring Academy Award Nominee Brenda Blethyn, and The Long Call , starring Ben Aldridge—all of which are watched and loved in the United States. All three are available on BritBox. The first Shetland novel, Raven Black , won the Crime Writers' Association Gold Dagger for best crime novel, and Ann was awarded the CWA Diamond Dagger in 2017. She was awarded the OBE in 2022 for services to reading and libraries. Ann lives in the United Kingdom.

  • collective madness

  • Disappointingly boring.

I am a great fan of Ann Cleese’s and have read and loved just about everything she has written. The Long Call is utterly boring and I had trouble getting through it. It was difficult to follow the antics of the large number of unremarkable characters and I was unable to remember all their names. Still there were a lot of positive reviews above so it must be to some people’s taste. Sorry Ann. Not this one’s not for me.

  • A good read

  • Very flat characters

  • 5sterne

  • The Long Call is the first in the new Two Rivers series by master author Ann Cleeves. Her Shetland Island series featuring Jimmy Perez and the Vera Stanhope series set in Northumberland are complex and atmospheric mysteries with a strong sense of place. The Long Call is a very fine beginning to the new series set in Devon. The atmosphere and the tone reminded me a bit of Broadchurch even though the story line is completely different. This police procedural features a strong team of characters. Chief among those characters is Matthew Venn. Matthew leads the police team investigating the murder of a man found stabbed on the beach near Matthew’s home. Matthew is a reserved man that we will get to know gradually. For now, we know that he is estranged from his parents, respected by his colleagues, beset occasionally by doubts, and dedicated to the truth. The book opens with Matthew as an unwelcome guest observing his father’s funeral from afar. There are two other main members of the police investigation team, and both of them should be good continuing characters. The murder investigation is complicated by different identities, conflicts of interest, and unreliable witnesses (some because of mental capacity and some because of untruthfulness). The pacing is steady and somewhat deliberate as the author must tell the story, introduce the main continuing characters, and develop the setting. Ann Cleeves’ Shetland Island and Vera Stanhope books are always a cut above the genre and worthy both of pre-order and full-price purchase. This series is also starting out very well. If you are looking for other good British mysteries while you are waiting for the next book by Ann Cleeves, you might also enjoy the mysteries written by Elly Griffiths (the Ruth Galloway series and the standalone Stranger Diaries); by Peter Lovesey (the Peter Diamond series set in Bath); by Robert Galbraith aka J.K. Rowling ( the Cormoran Strike series set in London); by Deborah Crombie (the Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James series set in London); by Elizabeth George (Inspector Lynley series set mainly in London) or by Cynthia Harrod-Eagles (the Bill Slider series set in London.) If you just like well-written mysteries with a strong sense of place without regard to which place, some of the best are Cay Rademacher (Provence), Martin Walker (the Dordogne), Jane Harper (Australia), Paul Doiron (Maine), Louise Penny (Canada), Jean-Lu Bannalec (Brittany), Mark Pryor (Paris), and Cara Black (Paris). I pre-ordered this book because of my attachment to Shetland Island and Vera Stanhope books, I will pre-order the next Two Rivers book as well.
