レビュー

  • Entertaining read!

This book is a great adventure by an open-minded youngBritish soldier who was literally transformed by his duty in India.

  • Fascinating insight into 19th Century India

I bought this book after learning that it was the inspiration for the classic 1930 movie of the same name starring Gary Cooper, although the plot was almst totally ignored! Notwithstanding this, it makes for fascinating reading, including the fact that the various regiments were virtually private companies. The aithor was not a particularly attractive person, but certanly led an adventurous and colourful life.

  • Great historical context

Great read. Abundant cultural norms and interactions. How British soldiers lived in India in the nineteen century. Very different from today!!!

  • Five Stars

A rare and vivid look into how the British Raj was.

  • Interesting read, more of a pastiche of events remembered than a simple memoir

Really captures the essence of India, and the Bengal Lancers in the early years of the 20th Century. You probably haven't read anything quite like this. The author was a British officer in the Bengal Lancers and the vignettes related in this book cover pretty much all of the aspects of what his life was like. The author was an astute observer, unlike many who saw India as a land of filth and squalor, he looked beyond the more obvious and was intrigued with the spiritualism and philosophy of the people. Much of the book covers his attempts to gain a better insight into the mysticism of the East. The overall impression I have is an intimate portrait of a time gone by, a snapshot as it were, of the lives of a Bengal Lancer set amidst the backdrop of the teeming multitudes of India in the early years of the 20th Century. A story vividly drawn from the pen of a man who lived that life.
