*Winner of the American Book Award* *Winner of the Lambda Literary Award for Gay Memoir/Biography* An Honor Book for the 2023 Stonewall Book Award—Israel Fishman Non-Fiction Book Award This witty memoir traces a touching and often hilarious spiralic path to embracing a gay, Latinx identity against a culture of machismo—from a cockfighting ring in Nicaragua to cities across the U.S.—and the bath houses, night clubs, and drag queens who help redefine pride I’ve always found the definition of machismo to be ironic, considering that pride is a word almost unanimously associated with queer people, the enemy of machistas . . . In a world desperate to erase us, queer Latinx men must find ways to hold on to pride for survival, but excessive male pride is often what we are battling, both in ourselves and in others. A debut memoir about coming of age as a gay, Latinx man, High-Risk Homosexual opens in the ultimate anti-gay space: Edgar Gomez’s uncle’s cockfighting ring in Nicaragua, where he was sent at thirteen years old to become a man. Readers follow Gomez through the queer spaces where he learned to love being gay and Latinx, including Pulse nightclub in Orlando, a drag queen convention in Los Angeles, and the doctor’s office where he was diagnosed a “high-risk homosexual.” With vulnerability, humor, and quick-witted insights into racial, sexual, familial, and professional power dynamics, Gomez shares a hard-won path to taking pride in the parts of himself he was taught to keep hidden. His story is a scintillating, beautiful reminder of the importance of leaving space for joy.
EDGAR GOMEZ is a Florida-born writer with roots in Nicaragua and Puerto Rico. A graduate of University of California, Riverside’s MFA program, he is a recipient of the 2018 L. M. and Marcia McQuern Graduate Award in Non-Fiction Writing. His work has been published and anthologized widely in such outlets as Popsugar , Longreads , Narratively , The Rumpus , and Ploughshares . He lives in Queens, New York, where he is saving up for good lotion.

Gomez’s memoir is absolutely stunning. The writing is smart and addictive with so much heart. What is great about this book is that there is a lot of heavy subject matter tackled but the author uses humor to keep us from being bogged down. Such a distinct voice, and I’m so looking forward to Gomez’s future books to come!

Read this as a monthly book club selection. Poignant coming of age story of a young man discovering who he is.

Edgar Gomez is full of surprises. His story of his early life is not the stuff that causes me to expect the eventual creative writer with a Masters Degree! His turn of phrase and clever metaphors make this a gratifying read, and I feel privileged to know him. With his story, I once again discover the high value in being homosexual! Thank you, Edgar!

Coming off of reading two brilliant books (Jaime Cortez' "Gordo" and Juliana Delgado Lopera's "Fiebre Tropical") I was really looking forward to reading the next book on my list by a queer Latinx author especially after being talked up by a few artists I respect. Unfortunately, I had a hard time getting into it from the get go. The intro was pretty meh and the writing just not that exciting. The two books I mentioned previously effin sparkle with life! High-Risk Homosexual just overall fell flat for me. It has it's moments but just not enough. I liked the chapters on their friendship with an older drag queen, their participation in a rag tag burlesque group and moving into student housing.

Edgar Gomez's memoir is told through a series of stories that trace his growth as a young gay man who navigates the touchy waters of coming out to family and friends. Some moments are painfully funny and others are heartbreaking, but nonetheless, this is a story about coming of age and determining what love and sex mean when you're gay. Gomez is a powerful, insightful, and intuitive writer who has always been a storyteller (look for his blog), but has now honed his skills to produce a memoir. I hope to one day see this become a TV series.
