• 風変わりなミステリを通してアメリカの歴史と現代社会を寓話的に描く2022年ブッカー賞候補

  アメリカ南部ミシシッピ州の田舎町Moneyで猟奇殺人が起こった。地元の白人男性が殺され、同じ場所で顔が判別できないほど殴られた黒人男性の死体が見つかった。黒人の死体が手に握っていたのは、白人の男の睾丸だった。さらに奇怪なのは、その黒人の死体が死体安置所から消えたことだった。地元の保安官らが首をかしげている最中にトイレでの密室殺人が起こった。そこでも先の殺人事件と同様のシーンがあり、再び黒人の死体は姿を消した。 この不可解な事件解決に手を貸すために、ミシシッピ州捜査局（Mississippi Bureau of Investigation）は２人の刑事を送り込む。すべて白人ばかりの町の保安官、副保安官、検死官は、都会から来た黒人刑事のJim DavisとEd Morganに対して敵意と不信感をむき出しにする。そこに黒人女性のFBI捜査官Herberta Hindが加わり、Money在住のKKKのグループは新たに団結の意欲を持つ。ところが不思議な猟奇殺人はそこで収まらずに他の州でも起こるようになる…。 1955年に、ミシシッピ州のマネーで実際に起こった14歳の黒人少年のリンチ殺人事件を知ると全体像が見えてくる。 深刻なテーマを扱っているが、スタンダップコメディ（Stand-up comedy）を聞いているような面白さである。人種差別者だらけのMoneyの白人たちの会話の醜さは、現実とそう離れていないはずなのに、あまりにもバカバカしくて笑えてしまう。そして、MBI（FBIに似て異なるところも笑いのネタ）の２人の黒人刑事のかけあいは、目前にいる差別主義の白人をネタにしたコメディのようで、これにも吹き出さずにはいられない。 大統領に対する風刺は直球なのでそこが不満な読者もいるだろうが、スタンダップコメディと捉えれば面白い。唐突なエンディングも、実は読者への問いかけであり、そこをどう捉えるのかで読者が試されているといえるだろう。

• Ein Must Read - unbedingt Lesen!

  Was für eine ungewöhnliche, starke Geschichte mit einem leicht surrealen Touch. Percival Everett rollt die US Amerikanische Geschichte neu auf mit der Sichtweise der Afro-Amerikaner auf die aktuelle und historische US Gesellschaft beschreibt. Das Thema Sklaverei, Lynchen, Civil Rights packt er mit seiner Sprachgewandheit in einen teils surrealen Rahmen verbunden mit viel Humor und sehr starken Charakteren. Viel Spannung wird u.a. erzeugt durch oft völlig unerwartete überraschende Wendungen. Das Ende des Buches ist ein Hammerende soviel sei geschrieben ohne zum Spoiler zu werden :) Das Buch Trees gefällt mir sogar noch besser als sein - inzwischen - zum Beststeller gewordener Take von Jim on Huckleberry Finn (ebenfalls sehr zu empfehlen. Ich werde nun noch seine weitere Werke dieses grossartigen Autors lesen. Er ist ein sehr aktiver Autor der den Booker Prize zurecht verdient hat.

• Original, ironic, funny, genius.

  I couldn’t put this down. Dr Everett’s book is like nothing I’ve ever read before. ‘James’ is next on my list.

• You will not read a better book than The Trees.

  This book is amazing, it's not often I can't wait to get to the next page, but this book is a real page turner, from the mystery of the tale itself, to the humour used. Also, the featured characters, all suit their names, this review may seem nonsensical, if you read the book it might make more sense!!! Do yourself a favour and buy this book!!

• Rollicking good fun

  This the first Everett novel I've read and I did so in 24 hrs. It is a very easy read, I think the short chapters contribute to that it but it is also an addictive plot and the tempo continues at a good pace. This book is funny, dark humour funny mostly but also just little puns and quips the author has inserted which unless you're paying attention you may even miss. I haven't laughed out loud at a book in forever and this one made me chuckle more than once.
