Nature’s fury tests a brother’s courage and a dog’s loyalty in this Carnegie Medal winning ending to the story of the beloved brothers of the Truth of Things series. WINNER OF THE 2020 CILIP CARNEGIE MEDAL. Things are tense at home for Nicky and Kenny. Their mum's coming to visit and it will be the first time they've seen her in years. A lot has changed since they were little and Nicky's not so sure he's ready to see her again. When they head for a trek across the moors to take their minds off everything, a series of unforeseen circumstances leaves the brothers in a vulnerable and very dangerous position. There might even be a chance that this time not everyone will make it home alive…
Anthony McGowan is the author of many critically acclaimed YA novels including Hellbent, Henry Tumour and The Knife that Killed Me. His Barrington Stoke titles include the Carnegie Medal shortlisted Rook and the 2020 Carnegie Medal winner Lark which the judges described as "a standalone masterpiece".

A courageous tale of friendship and family
A great read, ideal for young teens, to reflect on courage and resilience. A tale woven with hope and hardship. Well worth the quick read.

😢😢Very sad but great story. I really enjoy the description and the end where we find out what they did to their lives. Félicie

Tender, funny and incredibly moving
Anthony McGowan has pulled off something very rare here - a tender, funny and incredibly moving story that's written with dyslexic and reluctant readers in mind. Not that anyone would notice that, despite it being a short novel, printed in an easy-to-read font. Like the best poets, Anthony McGowan manages to convey an awful lot in relatively few words, and brings his stories about brothers Nicky and Kenny to an emotionally satisfying close. My children (10 and 12) loved it and so did I, even though it made us cry buckets. Now every time I go for a walk in the fields near me and hear the larks singing, I think of a particularly lovely passage in the book. Since we bought Lark, it has been shortlisted for the Carnegie Prize. I really hope it wins - it deserves to.

Adventurous, moving, honest
Adventurous in the truest sense: physically and emotionally, it explores risk, love, sacrifice and what it is we learn from our mistakes. Very funny and convincingly voiced, a great choice for young and less young readers.

Nice touches in a familiar structure
Nice novella with some good human touches, weighed down by a basic setup and structure which is too obviously constructed to pull tears at the end. (Light spoilers follow). When the book starts with a slightly simple older brother and a little dog, the only question is which one of them is the horrible thing going to happen to. Sure enough it does, and I wished that the close observation of childhood and what it means to be a family had been put to better use.
