• 展開が早くサクサク読めた。

  知らない単語も多かったが粗筋は理解できた。英検準1級レベルなら読めると思う。 貧しい農夫が富を築いて飢える心配はなくなるのだけど、その都度色々な問題がでてきて、ああ人生だな、と。

• 個人としての人間と集団としての人間の永遠の軋轢

  Kazuo Ishiguro氏のノーベル文学賞受賞をきっかけに、むかしThe grape of wrath, For Whom the bell tolls を読んだ事を思い出し、ついでにと本書を手に取った次第。三作とも１９２０，３０年代を時代背景に個々の人間と社会の関連性が的確に表現されてます。一人一人の個人は喜び、愛情、哀れみ等人間に共通した意識を保有しているが人間集団の社会は、それらを押し潰し、別の方向へと暴力を駆使して押し進んでいく。旧大陸、新大陸、アジアに共通したグローバルな動きであり、現在も存在しているのです。著名な作品なので物語には触れないが、最後の一節に作者Pearl Buckの卓越した力量が読み取れる。日本人のノーベル文学賞受賞者は他にもいるが、それは日本語の世界。Kazuo Ishguroが英語の世界でHemingway, Steinbeck, P.Buckと同列になった事は日本人として誇りに思います。

• 読み易い叙述、中学・高校生にもおすすめ！ ・ ・ ・ ノーベル賞作家・パールバックの代表作

  . 大変読みやすい原書（英文）である。 ジェーン・オースティンの「高慢と偏見」 と並んで、世評が高く しかも平明な記述の英米文学作品として、双璧と評し得よう。 全体のストーリーラインも大変分かり易く、中国の裏路地に漂う市井文化の泥臭さまで、 読む者に伝わってくる迫力を持った描写が特筆される力作である。 作中、主人公が富を築くきっかけが 「 富家に侵入し 偶然手にした宝石類 」 というのは、 少々強引な（？）ストーリー展開の印象が無いでもないのだが、 米国人の眼を通し丹念に描かれた本作品は、発表当時は世界有数の悠久な歴史を有する アジアの大国・中国に対する、欧米人のエキゾチシズムを大いに掻き立てたことであろう。 ディケンズ作品の 深い人間観察、モーム作品にみられる巧みなストーリーテリングなどとの 比較においては、読後感にやや物足りない側面は残るが、文学界に対し「中国文化の奥座敷」を 類いなきまでに 克明に剔抉しつつ､ 一級の文学作品を提供し得た業績については、 後年の 社会慈善活動と共に高く評価されてよいだろう。

• アメリカ人の作家が、ここまで細密に中国を描ける筆致に感激。さすがにノーベル賞作家！

  一大叙事詩、ギリシア古典のような壮大なスケールで展開する物語で、人物の描き方は、ギリシア神話あるいはメソポタミアやインド、イスラム圏の古典に近いような、おおじかけな展開で、さほどこみいった複雑な心理描写はなく、人物の進行と時代の展開をからめて、速度をもって進めているため、ヒトの心には深くきりこまない、ざっくりした小説ですが、まぎれもなく中国の国土の大きさと歴史の深さを感じさせる小説です。 昔おとこありけり。まずしい農夫。奴隷のはしため女を妻に迎えるころから気運は急上昇し、役に立つ妻と二人で始末して小銭をため、土地を買い足し、蓄えは増し、息子にも恵まれ・・とんとんと運がまわって・・・ところが広大な大地の農家では自然には勝てず・・・毎年のように孕む妻・・養う口は増え、干ばつで作物は絶望、大地は乾き、食えるものはすべて食し、売れるものはすべて売り尽くし、人々は人肉さえ食べる極度の飢餓のなかで、一念発起。豊かな南部に一家で逃避。 あばら家の小屋で夜露をしのぎ、こじきで食いつなぐので精いっぱい。とうぜんに盗みを働く息子をみて、自宅に戻ることを決意。娘を売って、旅費を蓄え、自作農に戻ることを迷う。一家は、食うや食わずの乞食の集合に寝起きしていたが、ある夜、城壁内部の富豪が暴徒の集団に襲われ、そのすきに手に入れた金銀をもとに帰郷。 没落した領主から土地を買い、小作を雇い、こどもには教育をさずけ・・・そこからは、遊郭から傾城を囲って女遊びも覚え・・・・糟糠の妻がうとましく・・・というような、一歩間違うとソープオペラ？お昼の連続ドラマ？の展開ではあるが、ソープオペラではない。 「天井桟敷の人々」も、あらすじだけならソープオペラっぽい流れでありながら、燦然と輝く古典的名作。 この作品も、あらすじだけなら、ソープオペラに見えそうであるが、中身はホンモノだと感じる。ずっしりと重たい。 さすがにノーベル賞だと思う。名作である。 アメリカ人宣教師や、外国人居留地に出入りする多国籍人種の存在や、珍しい異国情緒の風情。農奴の極端な貧困。無学無知な貧農の大衆の生き生きとした姿。その当時から、革命を叫び、学問を呼びかけ、異国支配を排斥しようとする運動家の存在。暴動。革命の幕開け。戦争。 そういった中国の王朝時代のラストを飾る時代背景がよく表現されている。 また自然の災害で飢餓に陥った農村の悲劇も、克明に描かれている。 19世紀最後の中国を、こういった小説の手法できめこまやかに浮かび上がらせる筆力はすごい！ とくに市井の人々、こじきの集合、暴徒たち、傾城たちの手練手管・・・心理描写は個人に密着していないので全く深くないが、ニンゲンをその時代の大きなうねりのなかで描ける筆力は、すごい！ 小説というジャンルでなく、ジャーナリズムの観点でも完成できたはず。そこを、小説に仕上げる構成力には感じ入る。 話のテンポが速いので一気に読めます。一つの章が簡潔で展開があざやか。 19世紀末の中国の激変、農奴の疲弊・・・いっぽうで城郭の中の富豪の豪遊・・・戦争・・・暴徒、動乱・・・そういう叙事詩の勢いに酔えます。絵巻物。 中国のパワー満開。中国は大きい。 でも作家はアメリカ人、しかも、女性。 どうしてこういう体力の要る壮大な小説がアメリカ女性に書けるのか？小説の構成や英語の構文はアジアっぽい風情、アジアの古典の匂があるのに・・・不思議です・・・・・そこが謎で魅力

• A classic read

  Pearl S. Buck is one of my favorite authors. And since I absolutely love well written books, I virtually devoured THE GOOD EARTH. I read this classic book when I was fourteen and have re-read six times since then. The character development was great and the story kept my interest until the last page. The pacing of the story was expertly done, and the writing style was just marvelous. With a rich plot and fantastic setting, the author successfully captured the remarkable element of human relationships, tapping into the varying human emotions that made the story so real. The more you reread the book the more your perception deepens, and the more you get to enjoy it. The setting enabled me to learn a great deal about China, the Chinese people and their traditions and customs and finally the lot that we all share as humans with cardinal virtues. That human touch is best portrayed by Wang Lung and O-lan his wife, the heroes of the book who defy the negative aspects of life and survive from the sweat of their brow and the produce of the good earth. I recommend this book along with DISCIPLES OF FORTUNE, THE USURPER AND OTHERS, THE UNION MOUJIK

• サスペンスよりも数段おもしろい文学

  「もうちゃんとした洋書を読まなくてはだめだよ」と大学４年生の教育実習の時に高校の英語の先生に言われました。それまではいわゆるretold版で易しい英文しか読んでいなかった私に「コレを読みなさい」。有無を言わさず紹介されたのが「The Good Earth」でした。怪訝そうな顔をしていると「まさかおまえ、良い土地、なんて訳してるんじゃあないよな」。実はそうでした。しかし「大地」と聞いてよけいげんなりしました。パールバックも「大地」も文学史で勉強したことはありましたが今までに手にしたこともなく、おまけに地味でいかにもつまらなそうなタイトル！しかし言われたからには買わないわけにもいかず、しぶしぶ買いました。 本格的な文学を原書で読むのは初めてでおそるおそる読み出しました。案の定地味で「台所」が舞台で物語は始まります。ところがです。確かに地味なストーリーが登場人物といろいろな出来事の絡み合いの中でそのおもしろさが大きなうねりとなって押し寄せてきたのです。タイトルが暗示するように農民が主人公で話はすすんでいきます。自分でも驚くくらい早く読み終えてしまいました。そして当時出ていた続編、続々編もすぐに買いあっという間に読んでしまいました。また完結編がちょうどペーパーバックになるという時期でこれも発売後直ちに購入してむさぼるように読みました。 「地味なのになんでそんなにおもしろいのかね？」と思われる方はだまされたと思ってぜひ読んでみてください。ことばでは「大地」にねざすようなスケールの大きなおもしろさを言い尽くせません。サスペンス小説顔負けとだけ述べさせてください。英語もそれほど難解ではなく英検で言えば２級の上から準１級くらいから十分読みこなせます。むずかしい単語熟語、構文等にこだわらずストーリーを追っていくだけでたっぷり楽しめますし、英語の速読力もつくし、おまけに「英文学を英語で読みました」と胸をはれると言うことで”一石三鳥”です。 先日新聞か何かで残念な記事を目にしました。「パールバックが今ブームになっている」というものです。ということは裏返せば「いままであまりかえりみられてなかった？」そう言えば各社の文庫の目録を見ても”文学”的なものがたくさん絶版にされています。これも時の流れでしかただないのでしょうか。 私はおかげさまでこの「大地」が励みとなり以後ずいぶんといろいろな洋書を読むようになり、私にとっては「洋書」のpilot的な記念すべき書となりました。原書はまだちょっと・・と遠慮している方にも格好の入門書です。

• 侮れない

  パールバックの大地のことを The good earth と言うことを今回初めて知りました。 単語が意外と難しいです。名詞に知らない単語が出てきます。 侮れません。

• A biblical tale

  A classic Chinese epic with a biblical tone. In fact it is only a way into the book that you get any clue as to when it is set so timeless is the decor. A fascinating insight into real rural China.

• Great literature.

  Pearl Buck's trilogy, The Good Earth, Sons, and A House Divided, is one of the great works of literature of the 20th c. Not only does it give an accurate, intimate and sympathetic view of many aspects Chinese society in the early 20th c., it is superbly written. One of those works in which you find yourself re-reading sentences because they are so beautifully cast -- as with the masterful works of Henry James or Charles Dickens, with which Buck can be compared. She was, after all, the first woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature (1938).

• beautiful writing

  This is the first in a trilogy of novels published in the 1930s about the lives of generations of a family of Chinese peasants in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The author was American Pearl S Buck, daughter of Presbyterian missionaries and who spent much of the first 40 years of her life in China. This novel was, rather counter-intuitively, the best-selling novel in the US in 1931 and 1932, in which latter year it won the Pulitzer Prize, while Buck herself was the first American woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1938. The beauty of the novel is that the land, the soil, the earth of the title is almost a character in its own right. It belongs to farmer Wang Lung and his family which early on in the novel consists of himself, his young wife O-Lan, and their two young sons, and Wang's father; with a feckless uncle, with his wife and son, lurking in the background. Wang works hard but struggles. Famine comes to the land and desperate times. His family moves to a southern city where, eventually they encounter political turbulence and Wang acquires a small fortune of gold coins. Back home in his village, he wisely buys land and grows his farm, becoming prosperous. There are sad and tragic scenes, humour, pathos and an interesting cast of characters. One shocking aspect is the way daughters are treated as opposed to sons, girls are described as "slaves" who are (though not in Wang's family) sold off (or even killed) during times of hardship to help the family. Part of the overall allure and mystery of the novel is its seeming to take place outside time and place - we don't find out the names of most of Wang's family members, and the outside world rarely impinges on their lives, with unspecified references to wars and revolutions, which I thought must refer to the Boxer rebellion of 1901 and the revolution that overthrew the Manchus in 1911-12, though the the stretches of time in the family's lives seems longer than these events allow - Wang is about 20 at the novel's start and about 70 at its end. I love Buck's writing style and her deep empathy for her characters and their landscape and culture.
