Written in six weeks in a spirit of anger after release from Broome jail for a wrongful conviction. Depicts how young Aboriginal people are pressured into social exclusion and crime.

The title story deals with complexities of Aboriginal identity. Set in 1980s, protagonist succeeds at university, excels in sports and art, accepted by white community but turns back on home. Returns to birth camp on 21st birthday, finds his 'white' identity invisible amid ignorance and prejudice. 'Herbie' is about white boy Davey witnessing killing of Aboriginal boy and feeling remorse.
