A young-readers' non-fiction account reconstructing the 1919 Chicago Race Riot—its events, causes, and consequences—using personal stories and primary sources; includes the author's grandmother's experiences.
A picture-book story inspired by the life and art of Romare Bearden, illustrated by Jerome Lagarrigue.
Contributed to young-readers' historical non-fiction and has been recognized for enhancing public and educational understanding of the 1919 Chicago Race Riot.
I never really liked history class because the texts felt unrelated to my life, but hearing my grandmother's stories and engaging with social movements sparked my interest in history.
The title was inspired by a line from Carl Sandburg's poem: "...a few red drops for history to remember."
