First given to authors in 1970, the award expanded to illustrators in 1974; Author Honor Books began in 1978 and Illustrator Honor Books in 1981. The program also includes the John Steptoe Award for New Talent (since 1996) and the Virginia Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement (since 2010).
