Legacy
Elangbam Nilakanta Singh is regarded as a pioneer of modern Manipuri (Meitei) literature; through poetry, criticism and cultural studies he contributed significantly to recording and revitalizing regional culture. He received the Sahitya Akademi Award and was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2000, and played leadership roles in Manipuri literary circles.
