Structured with inspiration from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, the novel explores exile and identity across twelve chapters. It weaves memories and fragments of family history to depict the protagonist's inner life and past.
Bastašić gained international attention as a young Bosnian writer; winning the EU Prize for Literature and self-translating her work into English broadened her readership. Her explorations of exile and memory have been recognized beyond regional literature in Western criticism.
"I grew up in Bosnia, amid fear and hatred of Muslims. Now I see Germany's mistakes over Gaza... the stifling of opposition to the killing of civilians in Gaza even extends to Jewish people."
