Analyzes internet freedom, censorship, privacy, and the roles of corporations and governments; argues that how technologies are structured and governed will shape whether the Internet supports democratic values, and outlines actions citizens and policymakers should take to protect rights online.
Through her writing and advocacy on internet governance and freedom of expression, she has influenced policy debates and civic movements. Known for co-founding Global Voices and founding the Ranking Digital Rights project, she is a prominent figure in digital rights advocacy.
We cannot assume that the Internet will evolve automatically in a direction that is going to be compatible with democracy. It depends on how the technology is structured, governed, and used.
