2014 Novel (political realism)

The plot follows Abdel Nasser (nicknamed "The Italian"), who inexplicably attacks an imam during his father's funeral. Set in Tunisia in the tumultuous late 1980s and early 1990s, the novel examines political clashes between leftists and Islamists, the forces behind Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali's rise, and themes of memory, repression and identity.
