- His grandfather emigrated from Biłgoraj (then part of Congress Poland) before World War I.
- After 1979 he worked as a full-time writer, but under the GDR many of his works were unpublished or censored.

- In 1985 he left East Germany on a travel visa and moved to West Germany.
