Description

Fiction prize established in 2001 by The Sunday Times (initially Sunday Times Fiction Prize). Renamed Barry Ronge Fiction Prize in 2015 in memory of Barry Ronge, targeting long fiction. Hosted by The Sunday Times, with CNA as sponsor from 2021. Canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19 but resumed in 2021. The winner is awarded a cash prize (R100,000).

Criteria

  • Fiction: "rare imagination and style... a tale so compelling as to become an enduring landmark of contemporary fiction." (Emphasizes rare imagination and style, compelling stories that become enduring landmarks of contemporary fiction.)
  • Nonfiction (Alan Paton Award): "the illumination of truthfulness... demonstrating compassion, elegance of writing, and intellectual and moral integrity." (Presentation of truthfulness, compassion, elegance of writing, intellectual and moral integrity.)
  • Originality of the work, literary quality, importance as contemporary literature, etc., are evaluated.
