Since its founding in 1979, it was awarded biennially until 1985 (as encouragement for emerging writers), and annually thereafter to the best prose work published in Croatia. The decision is made by a 5-member committee, and the prize consists of a certificate (povelje), a plaque with a portrait, and a monetary award.
