Three finalists are typically announced in January and participate in an award event (readings and an on-stage discussion) around March, when the winner is announced. The prize was founded by Julie Lindsey and is directed by Larry Dark. From 2006 to 2020 the event was held at the New School in New York City; in 2021 it was recorded via Zoom and has since been held at the Lotos Club.
