Sade is slipping her English book into her schoolbag when her Mama screams. Two sharp cracks splinter the air. "Mama mi?" She whispers Twelve-year-old Sade's journalist father is a vocal critic of the corrupt government in Nigeria. When Sade's mother is murdered, her family sees in bloody detail the violent risks that come with exposing the truth. Her father arranges for Sade and her younger brother to be smuggled to their uncle in London for safety. On the streets of London, the plans fall apart and they are abandoned, passed from foster home to foster home. They try to contact their uncle but he is missing. Then they learn that their father has escaped to London to find them -- but he will be sent back to Nigeria, unless Sade can find a way to tell the world what happened to her family. Chosen by young readers as the recipient of England's prestigious Smarties Silver Medal, Beverly Naidoo's The Other Side Of Truth explores the issues of family, exile, and freedom with the same eloquence and stunning realism of her award-winning Journey To Jo'Burg.

Beverley Naidoo grew up in South Africa under apartheid. She says: "As a white child I didn't question the terrible injustices until I was a student. I decided then that unless I joined the resistance, I was part of the problem." Beverley Naidoo was detained without trial when she was twenty-one and later went into exile in Britain, where she has since lived. Her first children's book, Journey to Jo'burg , was banned in South Africa until 1991, but it was an eye-opener for thousands of readers worldwide. Her characters in Chain of Fire , No Turning Back , and Out of Bounds face extraordinary challenges in a society she describes as "more dangerous than any fantasy." She has won many awards for her writing, including the Carnegie Medal, the Jane Addams Book Award, and the American Library Association Best Book for Young Adults for The Other Side of Truth , about two refugee children smuggled to London who are also featured in Web of Lies .

レビュー

  • A True Eye-Opener

I have never read a book as powerful as this. I consider myself an avid reader, but it is not common that I come across novels which have touched me so, although there have been a few. Unlike some novels that I have come across which are merely written by authors who are not familiar with the topic they are writing about, Beverly Naidoo, the author of this novel, The Other Side of Truth, clearly had experience with her subject. Part of the reason this story moved me so was because it aided me in opening my eyes to the type of important issues which never makes it to the headlines. I look forward to finding other novels similar to this one which provide an impression of what is taking place around the world.

  • Un bon livre facile à lire pour les étudiants qui veulent lire en anglais ! C'est rapide, intéressant et l'histoire est belle ! Le livre est simple à comprendre, niveau B1-B2 pour les scolaires

  • This book arrived very quickly and in perfect condition. History, adventure, and coming of age mingle in this moving story of a family who suddenly lose their mother and become political refugees. Beautifully written, this exciting story also poses hard questions about how much we should risk to stand for truth and against bullies. Valuable for kids, this novel is a troubling but also hopeful read for adults as well.

  • I had to read this book for my degree level Children's Literature course and I can honestly say it was one of the better of 14 novels. It is a well researched novel about political oppression and asylum and is also partly based on the writer's own experiences. The way it is written, from the viewpoint of Sade (shaa-day), a young Nigerian girl, is insightful and allows for a freshness of vision on the topics of asylum seeking. Cultural barriers are broken down as the reader begins to empathise with the children's experiences and start to question why does this happen? how can we make this better? A great read and one that has compelled me to read Naidoo's follow-up novel Web of Lies (about Sade's little brother Femi) and her first novel Journey to Jo'Burg. An excellent read! "Beverley Naidoo has struck home again, bringing together the critical themes of political oppression, exile, Africa and childhood. The Other Side of Truth has resonances of the execution of the Nigerian writer Ken Saro-Wiwa.... Not only a marvellous read but one that refuels the desire for justice and freedom within and beyond our shores." From the Foreword by Jon Snow of Channel 4

  • Muy chulo

  • This book arrived very quickly and in perfect condition. The Other Side of Truth is a middle school novel which focuses primarily on a young girl and her brother who must flee Nigeria to escape what seems to be a murderous governmental plot to silence their father, who is a journalist intent upon the revealing the truth - and his comments upon - the corrupt Nigerian government. Sade (Shaday) learns that, while the truth is precious, it can also hurt you. She has to decide what truths to tell and what to keep silent. This is a beautifully written book, which I (a middle school English teacher) enjoy reading and teaching, and which my students really like. It is full of action and emotion, and it communicates both world issues that we want our kids to know about, as well as more personal issues, such as bullying. I recommend it highly for kids in 6th grade and up, as well as adults who don't mind an easy read. There is a murder, so this may not be appropriate for younger kids.
