From one of Italy's most brilliant and most inventive writers comes the story of two visionaries of the mid-nineteenth century. Mr Rail is a small-town entrepreneur and glass-maker, and Hector Horeau is the Parisian architect who commissions him to make the glass for the Crystal Palace. They are joined by the extravagant inventor, Pekisch, and Elisabeth, a steam locomotive racing along on a railway to nowhere. Theirs is a Kafkaesque tale of angry visions, confused emotions and fantastic ambitions.

Alessandro Baricco was born in Turin in 1958 where he still lives today. He is the author of the internationally acclaimed novels SILK, OCEAN SEA and CITY.

Reviews

  • He is the Faulkner of our time. This book, I believe, is his first? Not his most masterful, but still stunning. And for folks who like to watch the evolution of a writer, you can see him chiseling out his craft here, then refining it in Silk.

  • Fast delivery and book as described. Love it, just what I wanted at an affordable price!

  • La storia é bellissima purtroppo il libro é arrivato rovinato.
