Heavenly Questions , the first new collection of poems from Gjertrud Schnackenberg since her critically acclaimed The Throne of Labdacus , finds her at the height of her talents and showcases her continued growth as an artist. In six long poems, Schnackenberg's rhyme-rich blank verse, with its densely packed images, shifts effortlessly between the lyric and the epic, setting passion to a verbal music that is recognizably her own. An exceptional and moving new collection from one of the most talented American poets of our time, Heavenly Questions is a work of intellectual, aesthetic, and technical innovation—and, more than that, a deeply compassionate and strikingly personal work.

Gjertrud Schnackenberg was born in Tacoma, Washington, in 1953. The Throne of Labdacus (FSG, 2000) received the Los Angeles Times Book Prize in Poetry.

Reviews

  • This is a brief but dense and beautiful book. It genuinely moved me, bringing tears to my eyes several times. I'm not sure if it's really six distinct poems or one long poem divided into six sections; the poems all echo each other, sharing repeated lines and images. This, along with the consistent pentameter and scattered rhymes, gives it a hypnotic, lullaby-like feel. It does help to have a little familiarity with ancient Greece and especially with Eastern religion/philosophy. If you don't, and are confused, you can google things (eg death of Archimedes, Buddhist arrow parable). I am familiar with these areas but still enjoyed it without fully understanding everything. I will definitely read this again, but I'm going to read Tian Wen and reread the Bhagavad Gita first.

  • This book arrived faster that the last date given. It was a Christmas gift for my wife who loves poetry. I heard of this American poet on a television programme about the late Clive James, on which he recommended her work. It think Gjertrud Schnackenberg is not well-known in Britain. It is a very short book but the poems are superb. I also bought and would recommend her longer book of poems 'Supernatural Love'. It is even better. .

  • Super read it

  • I can't recall when I ever sat down and read a book of poetry straight through, but I did (listening to Philip Glass) with this magnificent little book. It ripped my heart out...I wanted to weep, pray and sing all at the same time before finishing half the book. I'd read the poem 'Sublimaze' in a magazine and was completely hypnotized by Ms. Schnackenberg's vivid imagery and perfect timing. It was like reading a dream under water. If you love words and poetry, then you'll devour this book. It's as simple as that. I'm eager, now, to read every poem written by this amazing woman who truly has her fingers on the very pulse of life, even in the midst of death and tragedy.

  • Hypnotic imagery and narrative .....make this an enjoyable journey
