When Peter Dickinson was asked to write this book, he had his doubts, feeling that its connection with the Bible would shrink its potential readership to those of a religious bent. And, although it earned high critical praise, he was right. However, it's not a religious book. True, the stories will seem more familiar to those who have read the Torah (the Old Testament); but his approach is unique. Each is told by an ordinary person such as one might encounter in the Middle East, either in ancient times or not-too-long-ago. One is told as a cautionary bedtime story to naughty children, another as a joke shared in a tavern, another as a dimly-remembered incident from one's childhood. The Scriptural references are given in case one wishes to look them up; but these are usually not necessary. Each story also has a short essay located in the back in which Mr. Dickinson tells of his inspiration, problems, or related anecdotes. Michael Foreman's luminous illustrations are beautiful, capturing the textures and colors of the Middle East perfectly.

This is one of the best Bible story books I've read.
