"Clever, whimsical and sophisticated.” — New York Times Book Review Taking visual narrative to a new level, this picture book from the creator of Tuesday and Flotsam begins a seemingly familiar tale of three pigs preparing to build houses of straw, sticks, and bricks. But when the Big Bad Wolf comes looking for a snack, he huffs and puffs the first little pig right out of the story . . . and into the realm of pure imagination! Dialogue balloons pepper a wide variety of illustration styles taking readers through a dazzling fantasy universe to the surprising and happy ending. You will never look at “The Three Little Pigs”—or artwork—the same way again! "A funny, wildly imaginative tale that encourages readers to leap beyond the familiar; to think critically about conventional stories and illustration, and perhaps, to flex their imaginations and create wonderfully subversive versions of their own stories." — ALA Booklist , Starred Review

David Wiesner is internationally renowned for his visual storytelling and has won the Caldecott Medal three times—for Tuesday , The Three Pigs , and Flotsam —only the second person to ever do so. He is also the recipient of three Caldecott Honors, for Free Fall , Sector 7 , and Mr. Wuffles . He lives near Philadelphia with his family.

Not by the hair of my chinny-chin-chin!"

  • Kindle

  • not bad

very colourful. Nice story and beautiful hardcover

  • I read the children’s picture book The Three Pigs, written and illustrated by David Wiesner. The Three Pigs won the Caldecott Medal in 2002. The book starts off with the classic three little pigs story that we are all familiar with. This story is different however, as the pigs escape from the hungry wolf by “leaving the story,” and climbing out of their story into a world where all books can be entered. The three pigs then go on an adventure that see’s them recruit a dragon and the Cat with the fiddle to ultimately help defeat the wolf and live happily ever after together. I would classify this book as being of the children’s picture book genre. Going deeper than that, this book could accurately be described as a modern and very creative take on a classic fairytale. The author covers the subject of the story in a very strong manner. The story begins with the classic wolf huffing and puffing to blow down the pigs’ houses. This is the clear beginning. The story then progresses when the three pigs escape from their story and into the “world of books.” They travel through this world of books on a paper airplane made out of a book page. The three pigs then enter two other books, recruiting the Cat and the Fiddle, and a large green dragon to help them combat the hungry wolf. This is seen as the middle of the story and is gearing up to provide a resolution to the problem. The pigs and their new friends return to their home story and defeat the wolf. This is the end of the story and the final solution to the original problem presented to us on the first few pages. I think that David Wiesner tells the story more than satisfactorily. He provides an incredibly creative spin on one of the most well known stories in the world and does it in a flawless manner. The author and illustrator of this book is David Wiesner. He is a 58-year-old children’s book writer and illustrator living in Milwaukee. David has written and illustrated 11 books completely on his own. He has been solely the illustrator for another 17 children’s books. David has won the Caldecott Medal three times. This is an incredibly high number of medals for one author, but it is clear upon reading The Three Pigs why David has been so successful. The illustration in The Three Pigs is some of the best I have ever seen in a children’s book. I downloaded this story off of the iTunes store and then proceeded to read it digitally off my iPad. Upon completion of the story, I actually found a hardcover copy on Amazon and ordered it online. The illustrations are so good that I wanted to see them in their true form. I really have never seen such a creatively illustrated children’s book in my life and it makes for a truly refreshing read. There are four distinct illustration styles seen throughout The Three Pigs. This is what I found really so cool about this book. When the pigs enter the book to find a dragon, the drawing style is entirely different than when the pigs are in their home story. And when the pigs escape from their home story, they become drawn in a very realistic and “high-tech,” for lack of a better word, style. It’s really cool to see Wiesner go between different drawing styles, especially when more than one style appears on the same page. I would honestly recommend this book to anyone. I picked a completely random book off the list of Caldecott Medal winners and I stumbled upon easily the most creative and enjoyable picture books I have ever read. I really feel like this The Three Pigs was meant for the 21st century children. I look at this book and think, “Wow, my six year old cousin Liam would love this” and if that does not deem this work successful, I don’t know what will.

  • good bright story, good character, good illustration, quality large printing. My 27-month old son enjoys it. He likes the huffs and puffs, the trotters, the pink nose, the airplane ;-) the dreamy meadow scene and the dragon. It gets interesting, huh? It is about three stories interwoven in the world of stories starting and ending in one of the three stories. May seem confusing but it has devices helping the readers understanding what's going on. Such as different style of illustration, dialogue vs. narration in distinctive formats. I think it only gets complicated when you try to analyse the book. Kids will just get it naturally straight away.
