for schoenberg
This an excellent book. Rosen's non-conventional views are refreshing to read as they go against so many tired cliches and facile condemnations. The authors's philosophy of music is personal and therefore priceless. A must read on this subject.

Insightful
Very insightful, full of theoretical and philosophical teachings on dodecaphonic and early twentieth century Viennese history and music. And it wasn't a slog to get through on top of it. Charles Rosen is a great author to follow.

Excellent Essay
Next to Adorno one of the best texts about Schoenberg. Even if rather small, it is in fact an extended essay, Charles Rosen really captured the essence of Schoenberg's esthetics. Schoenberg is not easy on listeners and you can't really appreciate his prominence in music history with some context. Rosen achieves exactly this, to give you an idea about this bigger picture.
