"Shadows and Tall Trees is a smart, soulful, illuminating investigation of the many forms and tactics available to those writers involved in one of our moment's most interesting and necessary projects, that of opening up horror literature to every sort of formal interrogation. It is a beautiful and courageous series." - Peter Straub The acclaimed literary anthology Shadows & Tall Trees has featured authors short-listed for the Man Booker Award, and World Fantasy Award winners. Several of our stories have been reprinted in "Year's Best" anthologies and have garnered numerous award nominations. This volume features all-oroiginal new fiction from these masters of weird fiction: Malcolm Devlin Brian Evenson Rebecca Kuder V.H. Leslie Robert Levy Laura Mauro Manish Melwani Alison Moore Harmony Neal Rosalie Parker M. Rickert Nicholas Royle Robert Shearman Christopher Slatsky Simon Strantzas Steve Rasnic Tem Michael Wehunt Charles Wilkinson Conrad Williams
Alison Moore's first novel, The Lighthouse, was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize and the National Book Awards (New Writer of the Year), winning the McKitterick Prize. Both The Lighthouse and her second novel, He Wants, were Observer Books of the Year. Her shorter fiction has been included in Best British Short Stories and Best British Horror anthologies, broadcast on BBC Radio 4 Extra and collected in The Pre-War House and Other Stories. Born in Manchester in 1971, she lives near Nottingham with her husband Dan and son Arthur. Praised by Peter Straub for going furthest out on the sheerest, least sheltered narrative precipice, Brian Evenson is the recipient of three O. Henry Prizes and has been a finalist for the Edgar Award, the Shirley Jackson Award, and the World Fantasy Award. He is also the winner of the International Horror Guild Award and the American Library Association's award for Best Horror Novel, and his work has been named in Time Out New York's top books. fantastic collection
I've come to really value short stories through reading and listening to horror and "weird fiction" stories, and this is a fantastic example. Every story is worth reading, and so must be put together by an editor who knows how to make good choices. I'm new to horror and weird fiction (as what I guess must be a sub section of horror), and the approach of the writers is often to leave it open to question whether there is a supernatural cause to what's happening. This gives many of the stories the feel of very good "proper literature" with a bit of added narrative push coming from the is-there-something-more-out-there ambiguity.

A great read.
A solid anthology. I loved M. Rickert's Everything Beautiful is Terrifying. It is so distinctive, subtle and creepy - everything I look for in a story!
