In a far future city, where you can fall to a government cull for a single mistake, And What Can We Offer You Tonight tells the story of Jewel, established courtesan in a luxurious House. Jewel's world is shaken when her friend is murdered by a client, but somehow comes back to life. To get revenge, they will both have to confront the limits of loyalty, guilt, and justice. And What Can We Offer You Tonight by Premee Mohamed is a dystopian thriller with a breathless, unique voice.

This novella was great. It was so refreshing, think of it a quick palate cleanser between all the thrillers and romantic fantasy books I've been reading. I was pleasantly surprised. I bought it on a whim. Very easy to read and even though its short the world building was enough to comprehend what was happening. It's hard to put into words, just very different and I liked whimsical, like a dream. I also liked the main character(which is saying a lot since I haven't found one pleasant in a while) and it was easy to understand her motivations.

"It's not like he killed a person, you know, Jewel. He just busted a business asset." Jewel is a high-class courtesan in a dystopic city where the government disappears people for minor infractions. Murder has come to the House where she works. The first murdered courtesan some how rises from the dead in the middle of her own funeral - a funeral ceremony forbidden by government decree. More murders follow and Jewel and her "zombie??" friend are sunk in the mystery and the conflicts of loyalty and justice. A strange, dark tale in a horrible dark world where only the rich have justice.

I had to read this novella for a course at university. The idea behind it and the main themes and topics (oppression, divide between rich and poor, justice, corruption) are generally interesting, however I have to rate this book with one star. The style of writing made it extremely difficult to not throw the book aside. Also, the story does not really start to develop up until the last few pages which made it extremely boring to read. Like someone else already mentioned, trying to fit this kind of story in a small novella consisting of less than 100 pages does not do justice to the themes which could have been explored better in a novel. It took me 3 weeks to read a book of 82 pages because I could not get into it.

This book is really well written and really thoughtful.

This is a tricky book for me to review. The world feels new and unique to me. Since it is a novella, it is limited in scope. It is a dreary world. I think I would like to visit it again…
