The Tainted Cup (Shadow of the Leviathan)
A bizarre murder in an imperial mansion, where a high officer is found with a tree erupting from his body, sends Din and the brilliant detective Ana into a case tangled with leviathans, state corruption, and a dangerous borderland world. The novel blends the structure of a classic mystery with an inventive fantasy setting.

HUGO AWARD WINNER • WORLD FANTASY AWARD WINNER • NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A Holmes and Watson–style detective duo take the stage in this fantasy with a mystery twist, from acclaimed author Robert Jackson Bennett “Like an endearing fantasy version of Knives Out . . . A great murder mystery is hard to pull off but Bennett structures his perfectly, and the fact that it’s in a fantasy setting only makes it better.”—T. J. Klune, The New York Times LOCUS AWARD FINALIST • EDGAR AWARD NOMINEE A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: The New York Times Book Review, NPR, Elle, BookPage In Daretana’s greatest mansion, a high imperial officer lies dead—killed, to all appearances, when a tree erupted from his body. Even here at the Empire’s borders, where contagions abound and the blood of the leviathans works strange magical changes, it’s a death both terrifying and impossible. Assigned to investigate is Ana Dolabra, a detective whose reputation for brilliance is matched only by her eccentricities. Rumor has it that she wears a blindfold at all times, and that she can solve impossible cases without even stepping outside the walls of her home. At her side is her new assistant, Dinios Kol, magically altered in ways that make him the perfect aide to Ana’s brilliance. Din is at turns scandalized, perplexed, and utterly infuriated by his new superior—but as the case unfolds and he watches Ana’s mind leap from one startling deduction to the next, he must admit that she is, indeed, the Empire’s greatest detective. As the two close in on a mastermind and uncover a scheme that threatens the Empire itself, Din realizes he’s barely begun to assemble the puzzle that is Ana Dolabra—and wonders how long he’ll be able to keep his own secrets safe from her piercing intellect. By an “endlessly inventive” ( Vulture ) author with a “wicked sense of humor” (NPR), The Tainted Cup mixes the charms of detective fiction with brilliant world-building to deliver a fiendishly clever mystery that’s at once instantly recognizable and thrillingly new.
Robert Jackson Bennett is the author of the bestselling Ana and Din series, the first book of which, The Tainted Cup, won the Hugo Award for Best Novel and the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel and was an Edgar Award finalist. Previously, his Founders Trilogy and his Divine Cities trilogy were both Hugo Award finalists in the Best Series category. His work has received the Edgar Award, the Shirley Jackson Award, and the Philip K. Dick Citation for Excellence, and has been shortlisted numerous times for the World Fantasy and Locus awards. He lives in Austin, Texas, with his family.

Succeeds both as a fantasy and a mystery novel
'The Tainted Cup' is a mash up of two of my favourite genres - fantasy and 'whodunnit', and is brilliantly executed. It is set in a world where humanity must defend itself from regular attacks by vast sea monsters, kept at bay by a wall and a range of bio-engineered tools. Genetic modification is the norm - of people, plants and animals. The main character is Dinios Kol, who has been modified to forget nothing - a useful skill for a detective's assistant. The detective in question is Ana Dolabra, eccentric in the extreme but very good at her job. The two are called in to investigate the sudden death of a senior military engineer. He's been killed by the same experimental grass species that wiped out an entire country - and someone deliberately contaminated him with it. As in any good mystery, it's not long before the situation worsens and the body count increases - this time damaging the sea wall that protects the empire from the murderous leviathans. There's a need to solve the crime before anything worse can happen - and the lives of everyone in their society might depend on it. The novel succeeds both as a fantasy and as a whodunnit. The world-building and inventiveness of the fantasy is well done and satisfying, whilst the whodunnit has all the twists and clues and cleverness you hope for. The characters are very likeable, particularly Din, and the writing keeps you hooked from the start and flows well. I would highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys mystery/whodunnit novels (unless they really can't stand fantasy), and equally to those who like fantasy. It is a strong example of both, and I think will appeal to most readers who like a good story - it's well written, engaging and hard to put down. I am looking forwards to more in the series!

Fantasy Sherlock Holmes
