英国の伝記作家リットン・ストレイチー（Lytton Strachey, 1880-1932）が１９２１年に書いた「Queen Victoria」の全訳である。翻訳書名は史伝の先達・鶴見祐輔さんに倣って「ビクトリア女王伝」とした。 １８３７年６月、１８歳の乙女がイギリス女王になる。Queen Victoria（ 24 May 1819 – 22 January 1901) である。史伝としては、英国の立憲君主制の形成の側面やパックスブリタニカを作りあげて行くビクトリア期の首相たちの人間描写も興味深い。メルボーン、ジョン・ラッセル、ピール、パーマストン、ディズレーリ、グラッドストン・・・ 子女たちによって各国の王室と婚姻関係を結び、ビクトリアは「ヨーロッパ王室の祖母」となる。エリザベス２世は玄孫である。「大英帝国の母」と人々に慕われ、１８９７年、在位６０年のダイヤモンド・ジュビリーの日を迎えた・・・・
