The novel follows 14-year-old Jaimie McPheeters as he joins a wagon train from St. Louis, Missouri, to California following the 1849 Gold Rush. The narrative alternates between Jaimie's viewpoint and that of his father, 'Doc' Sardius McPheeters, a Scottish doctor prone to gambling and drinking. It includes graphic depictions of Native American rites of passage.
