Description

The Gold Medal of the American Academy of Arts and Letters is an honorary award presented by the Academy to honor outstanding achievements. Two medals are awarded annually across rotating fields, so the Poetry Gold Medal is not given every year. In poetry, recipients since the first award in 1911 include Robert Frost, Marianne Moore, W. S. Merwin, Louise Glück, Rita Dove, and others. In 1915, an additional Gold Medal for 'special distinction' to non-members was established. Selection is based on recommendations and voting by Academy members, with announcements made via the Academy's press releases and media. No monetary prize is specified; primarily the gold medal and honor are conferred.
