Established in 1985, it is an annual literary prize awarded by the City of Kassel and Stiftung Brückner‑Kühner. It honors writers who achieve high artistic quality in 'grotesque and comical works.' The main prize is 10,000 euros. Since 2004, it has also included a promotion prize (Förderpreis Komische Literatur, 3,000 euros) for writers under 35. Formerly awarded in November, but since 2006 moved to February of the following year, hence notations like '2006/2007.'
