Description
Premio Campiello is an annual Italian literary prize that began in 1963. It was conceived by Confindustria Veneto in 1962, with the first award ceremony held in 1963 at Teatro Verde on San Giorgio Maggiore island. Candidates are first selected by a committee of literary experts (giuria di letterati) from books published that year, and 5 works (Premio Selezione Campiello) are chosen as finalists through public deliberation. Then, 300 general readers representing each region (giuria dei 300 lettori) cast one vote each to determine the winner. Since 2004, Premio Campiello Opera Prima for the best debut work has also been established. For young people, Campiello Giovani (ages 15–22) is available, with winners decided through a youth committee, teachers, and the Giuria dei 300. From 1997 to 2003, Premio Speciale (special award honoring lifetime achievement) was also operated.
