NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER NPR'S FAVORITE BOOKS OF THE YEAR INDIE BESTSELLER GOODREADS CHOICE AWARD WINNER: BEST MEMOIR & AUTOBIOGRAPHY A laugh-and-cry-out-loud memoir from the beloved star of Netflix’s Queer Eye, Jonathan Van Ness Who gave Jonathan Van Ness permission to be the radiant human he is today? No one, honey. The truth is, it hasn’t always been gorgeous for this beacon of positivity and joy. Before he stole our hearts as the grooming and self-care expert on Netflix’s hit show Queer Eye, Jonathan was growing up in a small Midwestern town that didn’t understand why he was so…over the top. From choreographed carpet figure skating routines to the unavoidable fact that he was Just. So. Gay., Jonathan was an easy target and endured years of judgement, ridicule and trauma—yet none of it crushed his uniquely effervescent spirit. Over the Top uncovers the pain and passion it took to end up becoming the model of self-love and acceptance that Jonathan is today. In this revelatory, raw, and rambunctious memoir, Jonathan shares never-before-told secrets and reveals sides of himself that the public has never seen. JVN fans may think they know the man behind the stiletto heels, the crop tops, and the iconic sayings, but there’s much more to him than meets the Queer Eye. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you’ll come away knowing that no matter how broken or lost you may be, you’re a Kelly Clarkson song, you’re strong, and you’ve got this. Raw Honesty: JVN fans may think they know the man behind the crop tops, but Jonathan shares the never-before-told secrets about the pain and passion it took to become the icon he is today. Overcoming Trauma: From growing up gay in a small Midwestern town to surviving years of ridicule and sexual abuse, Jonathan's story is one of unshakable resilience. Addiction Recovery: For the first time, Jonathan opens up about his struggles with compulsive behaviors and drug addiction, and the powerful journey he took to heal. Living with HIV: In a brave and revealing look at his life, Jonathan shares his experience of being diagnosed with HIV and how he learned to live his truth without shame.

  • I <3 Queer Eye. I'm ploughing through the current iteration during the 32 1/2 minutes a day when I actually get to watch what I want on the TV, and I watched the original program back in the heady days of the early noughties when I didn't have to share my telly with anyone. In fact, the only way Queer Eye could be improved is if they introduced a companion show where five butch lesbians take a straight woman in hand and teach her that it's OK to be less peformatively feminine. Imagine my delight, therefore, when the delightful JVN released his autobiography. Obviously I don't actually know him, and I don't read celebrity crap in the media - for all I know he could be a tellybastard - but he comes across as a puppy on the show so I was totally here for his book. Admittedly JVN was only 32 when he wrote his autobiography, so there's not a massive amount of actual timespan compared to, say, an autobiography by David Attenborough, but he still manages to pack a lot of content in. And what content. Sounds like JVN had a super supportive upbringing and even then he's had a bunch of struggles and heartache. I enjoyed this so much- it rattles along really well and JVN writes exactly as he speaks so it had me laughing out loud a bunch of times.

  • Fantastic
