Winner of the Agatha Award, Macavity Award, and Anthony Award Finalist for the Mary Higgins Clark Award, Left Coast Crime Award, Strand Critics Award, and Library of Virginia Literary Award “A subtly but relentlessly unsettling novel.” —TANA FRENCH, author of The Witch Elm It was the perfect place to disappear... One sultry summer, Maureen Haddaway arrives in the wealthy town of Opal Beach to start her life anew—to achieve her destiny. There, she finds herself lured by the promise of friendship, love, starry skies, and wild parties. But Maureen’s new life just might be too good to be true, and before the summer is up, she vanishes. Decades later, when Allison Simpson is offered the opportunity to house-sit in Opal Beach during the off-season, it seems like the perfect chance to begin fresh after a messy divorce. But when she becomes drawn into the mysterious disappearance of a girl thirty years before, Allison realizes the gorgeous homes of Opal Beach hide dark secrets. And the truth of that long-ago summer is not even the most shocking part of all... “A heart-wrenching and suspenseful novel of betrayal and revenge. I am blown away!
What a tightly written novel. The character descriptions were on point, the storyline sailed smoothly along with the chapters alternating between Allison in the present and Maureen thirty years earlier. I took my time reading this and still read it within a few days. Only two typos that I counted but they pale in comparison to the overall literary integrity of the book. Twists within the last few chapters with a splendid ending. A most enjoyable read, highly recommended.

A compelling and evocative story.
One Night Gone is an eerily tense mystery/thriller that creates an evocative setting and an eclectic cast of characters that kept me wondering until the twisty ending on who was good versus who was evil. It did leave me with a few inconsistencies and some questions unanswered but those just kept me wondering and thinking about the book; to my mind a strength of a wonderfully crafted and compelling book.

Haunting, poignant mystery
The missing protagonist of this novel, Maureen, is as compelling and vibrant a character as I've read. The story of what happened to her, decades before, is slowly unravelled by Allison, who came to the same secluded seaside town where Maureen once sought sanctuary, to try to rebuild her own shattered life. Throughout the novel, Maureen's own voice weaves in and out of the parallel modern-day narrative, haunting, vulnerable and so full of life and courage that you want desperately for a happy ending for her, even as you feel the inevitability of gathering shadows. Ultimately, this is a delicate, skilful and devastating character-driven thriller, a painful exploration of the way in which society treats some women as disposable that will keep you up reading long into the night and stay with you for a long time afterwards.

One Day Gone Reading...and it was well-spent
I was torn on how how to rate this book because while the story had a good hook and an interesting story, the ending felt like a bit of a let-down. It was well-written and a really good read for me up until about the 85% mark, when I became certain of where the ending would take me and I just felt there was, for lack of a better description, a lot of untapped potential in the mystery and story. It was still, overall, a good read.

Held my interest, but...
While I enjoyed the story element and mystery of this book, which bounces between past and present timelines, I couldn’t get behind the lead character in the past. Despite supposedly being street smart, Maureen made bad decision after bad decision. Given her upbringing, I should have been sympathetic of her circumstances, but I found her selfish and misguided. Too much to swallow. The lead character in the present, Alison, had the better storyline which carried the mystery for me. I read to the end with interest, so despite the hiccups, I found this a 3-star read, and would try this author again.
